As you know, winter is not a reason to give up your favorite entertainment and wait for the warmth to go on a long-awaited fishing trip. Winter fishing is both an opportunity to enjoy communication with the fabulous nature and to bring home a good catch. Especially if you are going to fish perch with a jig.
This is the kind of fishing that will hardly seem boring and can give a good catch even to a novice fisherman. Perch is a frequent guest of our reservoirs, winter is not a reason for him to refuse food, therefore, perch is the most affordable catch for ice fishing today. If you know: where to catch, how to catch and how to catch – success in catching minke whales is guaranteed!
Seat selection
Despite the fact that perch is quite active in winter and is found in almost every body of water, it is necessary to approach the choice of a fishing place responsibly. The optimal depth, according to the observation of experienced anglers, is a distance of one to two meters.
Of course, the perch is found at medium depths, but for the speed of lowering the tackle it is more convenient after all in shallow water. In addition, the features of the bottom topography should be taken into account. For camps, this type of predator chooses places with solid ground and all kinds of irregularities in the bottom, such as holes, curbs, piles of stones.
You should also take a closer look at areas with trees felled into the water, thickets of reeds. If the reservoir is equipped with a concrete fence, perch parking can be found in a place where soil replaces the concrete slabs.
Tackle for winter fishing for perch
Let’s consider some of the features of those tackles that are needed for winter perch fishing. This, of course, is the line, the nod for the rod, the rod itself and the jig.
So, the line. When choosing a line, you should avoid extremes and do not choose too thick, or, conversely, too thin line. A thick line, for example, 0.16 mm., Of course, will help out if a large fish bites, but usually it slows down the sinking speed of the jig, makes its vibrations awkward and unattractive for fish. A line that is too thin will only support a very small perch. Therefore, you should focus on the diameter of the line in one millimeter.
I am using 1mm Dragon Millenium Winter:
Such a fishing line will not create difficulties for maneuvers with a jig and, with a certain dexterity, will allow you to cope with large fish.
Moving on to the specifics of the nod. This tackle is used as a bite signal and helps to diversify the game with the attachment. The nod is adjusted to the individual weight of the jig. The angle of bend of the bow in relation to the rod should be taken into account when the jig is immersed in water.
It should not exceed 30 degrees. This is necessary for the convenience of playing with a jig in order to achieve the desired vibration frequency in the water. Although there are different opinions on this, some anglers find it more convenient to tilt at 45-60 degrees. To make the nod more noticeable, you can additionally paint it in a bright color with regular nail polish or waterproof marker.
Now a few words about the features of the rod. When fishing for perch, some anglers do not pay much attention to this tackle, using a regular juniper rod and a piece of foam for the handle and winding of the line as it. Such a rod is usually referred to as a “filly”.
If we turn to the traditional method and buy a rod in a store, then most often when fishing with a jig, they use a “balalaika”. In it, the reel is built directly into the rod body. It is this part that is held in the hand when manipulating the tackle. Of course, this is not the only type of rod with which it is easy to fish, the main thing is that it is light, comfortable and fits comfortably in the hand.
Well, the main tackle in this type of winter “hunting” for perch is a jig. The successful outcome of fishing depends on the correct choice of this tackle. With regard to the winter fishing season, they are of two types: used for bait and non-snug (rewoundless). Both options have proven themselves well in the fishing process. The rewinder has an empty hook.
In another case, a nozzle is used – artificial or animal. The use of rewinder reels is possible with some experience in handling them, so beginners are better off choosing the first option. When choosing such jigs, it is necessary to pay attention, first of all, to its weight, it should not fall like a stone to the bottom, that is, be very heavy, but too light a jig is not an option, since it will submerge in water for a long time and will adapt it to the game hard enough.
For hunting perch in a pond without an active current, small jigs of 2-4 mm are most preferred. weighing up to 0.3 grams. You should also pay attention to the sharpness of the hook, it should not be blunt and small. As for the shape and color of the jig, here the opinions of fishermen vary greatly. Some people think that these parameters are irrelevant and should not be emphasized.
Another popular opinion says that the best shape for a jig is – a drop, a larva, a pellet, as for the color, the preference is given to gray, white, yellow, green, black colors. In the process of gaining experience, each novice fisherman will choose the best option for himself.
Lure
The most common type of bait is fodder bloodworm, but then it is taken as bait. To lure the fish, bloodworms are pinched into the water, while the perch, following the trajectory of the fall of the food, gradually rises from the bottom to the top. This means that bites happen higher and higher, and it happens that at the very hole, in the presence of a shallow depth.
Bait
Most often, red bloodworms are used as bait for perch.
But with an unsuccessful bite, you should have a certain supply of baits of different colors, shapes and sizes, because no one, ultimately, can know exactly what exactly will give a good bite in each particular case. You need to have a supply of baits for the experiment. You can take the larvae of burdock moth, maggots, chopped worms. You need to make sure that the size of the attachment is not larger than your main tackle.
Make sure that the jig is not empty. It happens that the predator pulls off the bait with impunity, and then the perch flock, having lost interest, leaves the side and it will be extremely difficult to attract it to the hole again. It is more expedient in this case to change the place of fishing.
Fishing technique and tactics
Having done all the necessary preparatory manipulations, it is the turn of drilling the holes. It is most expedient to make them in an amount of 10 pieces at a small distance from each other, if, of course, external conditions make it possible. Having thrown a supplement into each hole, we start fishing in the first fed hole.
In order to attract the perch to the jig, you should play with it, that is, gradually move it, changing different options and choosing the one that the “minke” likes today. There are several standard options.
- Wait until the jig touches the bottom, make a few taps and then raise the jig with varying intensity by 30-40 cm and re-dive.
- After the final dive, you can raise the tackle at a distance of 20-30 cm from the bottom, while twitching the jig with an average frequency and amplitude. Then again dive without hesitation.
- Make a few taps on the bottom, slowly raise the tackle by 5-7 cm, freeze for a few seconds, and again immerse the jig to the bottom.
- Frequent rhythmic jerking of the jig near the very bottom with pauses of 2-3 seconds.
If, despite all the efforts, the perch did not respond in the first hole, go to the next and so on until the desired result. If a perch pecked it is tedious to try to remember all the manipulations that led to this and repeat during the next casting.
