Fishing in the Yukon
"The pursuit of fish and game is an ancient tradition in the Yukon. For First Nation people, it is an unbroken tradition closely tied to the land we share today. For many other Yukon residents, it is a way to put lean, chemical-free meat on the table while enjoying the wilderness environment that begins at our doorsteps. For non-residents, hunting and fishing can be the focal point for a once-in-a-lifetime journey into the fabled Yukon wilderness." - The Yukon DRR

Fish Species

Salmon
Four salmon species - chinook, coho, chum and sockeye - return from the ocean to spawn in Yukon creeks and rivers. A fifth salmon species, Kokanee, is a small, landlocked sockeye. Kokanee, chinook salmon, rainbow trout and Arctic char are stocked in pothole lakes near most Yukon communities.

"Love of fishing unites the people of the Yukon. There is a quiet joy that comes from the simple act of catching a fish. Practicing respect for the resource will ensure that that joy will continue to be known by our children and our grandchildren".
